"Why wait around, if it's just to surrender?"

I keep disconnecting every two / five /  ten minutes. It has to be the router because my mom and the roommate are having the same problem.
If you say it's because we all use the internet and hogging it up, get out. We've been doing this forever. And it only JUST NOW started acting up. And it does it even when other people aren't on. As an example, right now. Guess who's the only one up at 5.26 AM?

Anyway. This is making it a lot more difficult to do my job (Which already got harder earlier. Thus making it three times as hard). I can do it, it's just very stressful when I have to wait for my connection to feel better so I can log in again and deal with whatever I was dealing with before.
Can you see the dilemma?

If you have a smart idea on how to fix it, by all means - I'd love to hear it. Of course "buy a new router" is the obvious.

If it's at this point, there's only one option - buy a new one. That is, if it's actually the router and not the modem or something...

I don't know how to tell if its the router or modem ): I just assume it's the router.

Well it depends... do you actually have a separate modem or is the modem built into the router? If they are separate, you can connect your computer directly up to the modem, change the settings so it connects to the internet on its own if it doesn't already, and see if you still get drop-outs. If you do, it's the modem. If you don't, it's the router.

You have a linksys wrt54g router and im guessing dsl so you need to login to your modem set it to a bridge mode then have your router do the pppoe connection its a known bug for most linksys routers and will cause random net drops

Pfff. I lost internet completely yesterday - as some of you MIGHT have noticed from being absent from prpr - and so we called up the comcast people. They reset it and all the lights went on... and then then the internet went out again lawl. She also said our modem had a terrible history with disconnecting. It d/c fifty times in one day alone. So then a guy came out today and set up a new modem for us, I guess. XD ALL BETTER. As I'm obviously online right now.

Good to hear your internet connection is fully functioning.
I had the exact same issue, And after a visit from my ISP, A new modem was supplied as my one [Which was around 4-5 years old by now] had given in.

the new modem i have is 50 Versions higher than the original modem i had.. And my conenction speeds are faster than usual, meaning i have been ripped off by my ISP for the past 5 years, paying for connection speeds that i never got due to the Old modem they supplied me with, Business' aye? Evil.

Your speed isnt based on your modem that just means your old modem was so crappy it wasnt giving you the full speed you were paying for... Your direct internet speed is based off what your isp sets not your hardware unless your net isnt limited but thats like never the case unless your paying 10,000 a month for a direct line to a backbone setup for mostly hosting... Tongue In short you have more speed with your new modem vs the old one because the old one wasnt powerful enough to read and send as much data as you were sending and requesting at the time.

A good example is computers say your playing battlefield 2 and your only getting 30frames a second then you replace your video card and now you get 60 frames per second your computer was able to do more it was just limited by some part of your hardware. Thats as simple as I can explain it.

You should still call tech support and have your modem setup to a bridge mode then make your router your main pppoe connection.
